Translation of article written by Dr.Vasantha Hosabettu, about Fountain of Elephants published in Sudha, Kannada Weekly dated 22nd May 2014

A remembrance of India in a city of France


 For the people of a city called Chambery, which is in South East of France, India is being remembered. This is because of the monument called Fountain of Elephants,

 Fountain of Elephants is a monument of French military officer Benoît de Boigne.   This is being carried by four Indian Elephants. This monument is popular ever since it is inception in year 1838

Benoît de Boigne   had used his entire savings of his earning in India  for the welfare of Chambery, Chambery is his native place, He has given  hospital, educational institution, drama school, city hall for the city, He has been called protector of the city. He is popular in the city as he developed the city,

 When I was in France, above fact has been bought to my notice  by cartoonist Mr. Georges MILLION

Mr. Georges MILLION is from Chambery, Distance between Paris and Chambery is about 523 Kilo Meters

Benoît de Boigne( 21.3.1751 to 21-6.1830) is cotemporary of Tipu Sultan, Warren Hastings. At that time Maratha  rule was prominent in India, Benoît de Boigne has worked as chief of military of  Gwalior Maratha prince Mahadji Scindia.

Benoît de Boigne has  learnt Hindi and Persia in India. He married Persian Indian lady too.
